The Meaning of 'Mandala'

Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning 'circle' and represents the Universe. The pattern within the Mandala is usually balanced and harmonised, symbolising how we are all connected and part of the wider universe.

A Mandala is a circle or square chart with geometric designs. It is constructed of concentric circles and/or squares that lead to the centre. As the eye is drawn to the centre it makes it a useful tool for meditation

Mandalas play an important part in Tibetan Buddhism where they are used as means of worship.Buddhist monks create intricate mandalas of coloured sand, which are then destroyed on completion. This act of destruction signifies the transience of all life - nothing is permanent no matter how beautiful or cmplex.

 The three types of mandalas

  • the sand mandala - uses crushed up pieces of coloured stone or sand
  • healing mandala - helps calm the creator or viewer
  • teaching mandala - used as an important part of religious training in the Buddhist faith
